Preview: Inter Miami vs New York City

The hosts have only been able to win a single game against the Pigeons.

Inter Miami are all set to host New York City FC in the MLS 2025 Eastern Conference. In the new season, both sides will be looking to start things on a positive note. Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami finished on top of the Eastern Conference table last season. They had a good regular season in the league as they won 22 games in 34 matches. New York City FC finished sixth in the table.

Inter Miami CF will be at home and will be looking for a win here. Lionel Messi and Co. also emerged victorious in their previous fixture. They had a CONCACAF Champions Cup first-leg match against Sporting KC.

The Herons netted a goal to seal the win. With this, they have the advantage now ahead of the second leg. They will now look to continue their winning momentum in their MLS 2025 opening game.

New York City FC haven’t had the best of the seasons last year, but they never let Lionel Messi and Co. take the upper hand. Their couple of meetings last season ended as a draw. Here New York City FC will be playing away from home. They may not have finished last season very well but they will have a chance to start afresh here.

About Concacaf Champions Cup:

History

The CONCACAF Champions Cup, formerly known as CONCACAF Champions League (2008–2023), is an annual international club competition organized by CONCACAF as its top continental football tournament for clubs from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. The champions automatically qualify for the FIFA Club World Cup and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup.

The tournament currently uses a knockout format; it had a group stage prior to the 2018 edition. Unlike its European and South American counterparts, the winners of the CONCACAF Champions Cup does not automatically qualify for the following edition of the tournament.

The title has been won by 30 clubs, 14 of which have won the title more than once. Liga MX from Mexico is the most successful league, with 39 titles in total. The second most successful league is the Liga FPD from Costa Rica, with 6 titles in total. Club América is the most successful club in the competition, winning 7 titles. The most successful non-Mexican club is Deportivo Saprissa, winning 3 titles. The only four teams to successfully defend the title are all Mexican: América, Cruz Azul, Pachuca and Monterrey. The current champions of the competition are Pachuca, who defeated Columbus Crew in the 2024 final.

Each round of competition consists of a two-leg home-and-away series with the winners determined by aggregate goals over both legs. If aggregate goals are equal, the away goals rule is applied. If away goals are also equal, the game goes to an extra time period. If it is still tied, the game is decided through a penalty shoot-out.

Prior to 2018, the tournament had two parts: a group stage held from August to October, and a knockout phase held from March to May of the following year. The group stage consisted of 24 teams playing in eight groups of three teams each, with each team playing the other two teams in its group twice. United States and Mexican sides could not be drawn into the same group. The winners of each of the eight groups advanced to the quarterfinals. Each phase of the knockout rounds (quarterfinals, semifinals, finals) consisted of a two-leg home-and-away series with the winner determined by aggregate goal differential. Seeding in the knockout phase was determined by performance during the group stage.

Prior to the 2012–13 season, the competition had involved four groups of four, with one Mexican team and one U.S. team in each group. A preliminary round was used to reduce the number of teams from 24 to 16.
